Shell Oil Company History


Have you ever heard about a company which actually started as a gewgaw shop in London. Initially this novelty shop sold sea-shells which later became the giant in the oil and petrochemical industry .Yes you guessed it right..Its Shell Oil Company popularly known as Shell.This one of the most valuable and fifth largest revenue generating company was actually started by Sir Marcus Samuel  who inherited same name and business from his father( Marcus Samuel) of selling the sea shells which were imported from far east. During a boat trip travel then young Sir Marcus Samuel noticed and realised the potential of trading of oil. He soon formed Shell Transport and Trading Company Ltd. The name Shell given to this newly found company was a homage for their previous business.

The iconic logo was illustrated by Raymond Loewy; his shell image is still being used today. The logotype changed in 1995, and the shading plan currently utilized a more splendid red and a hotter yellow, yet the shape remained the equivalent. Indeed, even without the brand name, it is most recognised logo compared to other perceived logos in the corporate world.

The first logo of Shell company was representing mussel shell which was replaced by a scallop shell in 1904.

How the Shell Company logo and Royal Dutch Shell logo developed over years and the significance for various parts of Logo like from a reasonable pecten or scallop shell, the logo has been changed to the present improved shape with particular hues. Both "Shell" and the pecten image may have been recommended to Marcus Samuel.

Shell Amalgamation

The existing Royal Dutch Shell group is incorporation of two  then rivals in the petrochemical industry, Shell Transport and Trading and the Royal Dutch Petroleum Company. The merging took place in 1907 to compete with Standard Oil Company, the slash was removed from Royal Dutch/Shell in 2005, and the name Shell remains today. 

Is Shell a Dutch Company ?


Royal Dutch Shell PLC is now a British-Dutch oil and gas company headquartered in the Netherlands and incorporated in the United Kingdom, though it is interesting to find that

almost all CEO of Shell were of Anglo-Dutch origin.

 Shell Major Business Operations: plans beyond oil

Oil and gas exploration remains the key focus of the business for Shell. Shell is also engaged in drilling and production of oil and natural gases,refining,transport,
distribution and renewable energy management. 

The diversified operations of Shell group has spread over 70 countries all over the world. 

Regardless of this heap of changes, Shell's oil and gas business will represent the main part of its capital outlay and produce the greater part of its benefits for a considerable length of time to come.

Controversial Side of Shell

Despite of the sustained success,Shell group has also faced number of controversies too in the past couple of decades like it lost trust in 2004 when the group overstated its oil reserves.

Protests against Arctic Drilling 



Shell's renewable energy business was also criticised for being deceptively greenwashed, and arctic deep sea-drilling
was another daunting project for shell which eventually caused Shell to announce a pause in the project.The Shell Company also ranked high for being most hated company and criticized by NGOs.


Recently Ben Van Beurden,CEO Of Royal Dutch Shell, one of the largest oil companies in the world was in news for his statement that he would replace his gasoline car by an electric car.
